Scientists predicted what would happen, but it was too late. The earth has been devastated, and one lone survivor is still stuck on the planet. Netflix has dropped the first trailer for the sci-fi thriller IO. And we get a new poster for this post-apocalyptic devastator as well.
Sam (Margaret Qualley), one of the last survivors on a post-cataclysmic Earth, is a young scientist dedicated to finding a way for humans to adapt and survive, rather than abandon their world. But with the final shuttle scheduled to leave the planet for a distant colony, her determination to stay is rocked by the arrival of another survivor, Micah (Anthony Mackie). She must decide whether to journey with him to join the rest of humanity and begin life anew, or stay to fight for Earth’s survival.
Margaret Qualley and Anthony Mackie are joined by the acclaimed actor Danny Huston in IO, which shouldn’t be confused with their hit original series The OA, which still hasn’t given fans a second season yet. IO is directed by Jonathan Helpert from a script written by Clay Jeto and Charles Spano and Will Basanta. The movie is produced by Jason Berman and Laura Rister.
IO has been in development for quite awhile, and previous to Margaret Qualley and Anthony Mackie signing on, Elle Fanning and Diego Luna were up for the lead roles. But both dropped out before the movie could move forward. The title comes from the 1981 Sean Connery movie Outland. That sci-fi thriller about space truckers had a decidedly different storyline, but test audiences kept confusion the title for 10, which was a very popular Bo Derek movie that had come out a couple of year’s prior. Now, young audiences have no connection to 10 and the filmmakers aren’t so worried about any preconceived confusion.
Jonathan Helpert made his directorial debut with the 2015 international thriller House of Time after making his name known in the world of short films. Clay Jeto is making his first big blockbuster with the screenplay for IO, which he collaborated on with Charles Spano, who previously wrote Embers in 2015.
Margaret Qualley got her start with a role in the 2013 James Franco drama Palo Alto. She then moved onto the 2016 detective comedy The Nice Guys from The Predator director Shane Black, starring opposite Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe. She had a recurring role as Jill Garvey on HBO’s hit apocalyptic drama The Leftovers and appeared as Mia Sutton in Netflix’s adaptation of the hugely popular manga Death Note. She will next be seen starring as Kitty Kat in Quentin Tarantino’s penultimate feature film as a director Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Anthony Mackie is perhaps best known as Sam Wilson, aka The Falcon in the Marvel Movie Universe, having been introduced in Captain America: Winter Soldier and having last been seen in Infinity War. He is expected to return in this summer’s epic conclusion Avengers: Endgame, and is getting his own Falcon TV series on Disney+ streaming.
Netflix had a huge hit with their original sci-fi thriller Bird Box over the holidays. Entering 2019, they have over 80 original movies planned, many of which will fall to the wayside and be forgotten before they even have a chance to be streamed by the general public. Will IO be another Bird Box type phenomenon? Or will it get the attention it deserves when it arrives in just a few days? We’ll have to wait and see. The first look footage arrives direct from Netflix streaming Youtube.
